The Archers...daily or omnibus?

new member, imagine my delight to find a radio 4 tribe!!! Yay! ;-)

The Archers rocks...want to know how you listen - daily at lunchtime at evening or do you wait for the Sunday omnibus like me? If I have the radio on in the evening and I hear the theme tune at 7, I have to shout "Nooooooo, noooooo!" as I run to turn it off so I don't hear any snippets before the delicious whole hour and a quarter on a Sunday!

What 'bout you?

I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue mailing list member

We bring you news of the first two recordings in the Autumn series of I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue. The third is not yet confirmed but looks like it will take place in Yorkshire in late December.

In response to the many emails we received last series from people unable to book tickets, this series we have deliberately selected theatres with a large seating capacity. So we hope that as many of you as possible are able to get tickets.

Recording One:

This will take place at the London Palladium on Sunday 2nd October 2005. Tickets are priced at £12.50, £10.50, £8.50 and £6.50. The theatre normally adds a booking fee to the price of the tickets, however we have arranged to absorb this cost for you. To book tickets, you should either call this telephone booking number: 020 7494 5438 (open 24 hours a day) or try booking online at www.seetickets.com

The recording starts at 7.30pm and the doors open at 6.45pm. We should be finished by 10.30pm. The special guest for this show is Jeremy Hardy.

Recording Two:

This will take place at the Brighton Dome as part of the Brighton Comedy Festival on Tuesday 18th October 2005. Tickets are priced at £10 and £8. To book tickets you need to contact the Brighton Dome Box Office on 01273 709709 (open Monday-Saturday, 10am-6pm). The ticket sales website address is www.brighton-dome.org.uk/events/events.asp?et=2

The recording starts at 7.30pm and the doors open at 7pm. We should be finished by 10.30pm. No special guest has yet been confirmed for this recording.

And that's about it for now. We'll try to get details to you of the Yorkshire recording as soon as we can.

Best wishes

A quick limber up?

I was wondering idf anyone fancied the notion of limbering up to a festive game of Mornington Crescent with a nice easy stroll using the "special children’s junior version" wherein "To make things extra easy Waterloo Mainline is irreversible if approached on the diagonal during a lateral pass." To make things a little more interesting we could incorporate "Hugo’s 2nd stratagem" (Moves across consecutive rows are prohibited unless you’re in Knip)as stated in 'NF Stovold’s Mornington Crescent: Rules and Origins'

Anyone want to kick off?

New tribe to support up and coming British singer/song writer Rachel Fuller and her unique style and sound. If you want a break from all these pre-pubescent 'singers' touted as edgy and who can't play worth diddly, Rachel Fuller rocks. Oh and she allows Pete Townshend to make her daily pot of tea, how cool is that?

Let's get her new single 'Into My Heart' on Radio 2 in Great Britain next week!www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/shows/...inson/contact.shtml

Word Disassociation I

The object of this game is simple enough, but I've had to adapt it slightly from the radio version to make it work in a forum-style forum, so-to-speak.

The aim is to follow a word with a totally un-related one -- for example, if i started with handbag, that could be followed by dolphin, pharaoh, gazelle or some such word -- but not by leather, strap, purse, etc.

Now, in the radio version this is played in teams -- i would like to suggest a points system. For each dissassociated word you gain 1 point, but for each word for which someone (before the next move is made) successfully challenges by showing an association, you lose 4.

I shall start, with antelope.

New Definitions

Right, things have been a bit quiet around here of late so i thought it was probably time for a new game.

Time for a round of new definitions.

One of the nicest things about the english language is the way that it incorporates new words into itself with the utmost ease, and can change the meanings of existing words without blinking.

So, does anyone have any new meanings for words which they might have overheard recently?

I shall start.

Sadistic.

The most unhappy of a group of fleas.

Whole new ball game...

Not a game envolving balls during play, this ISIHAC classic has earned ranking within the ball game genre as a result of the classification of what can only be descibed as its outcome; I refer of course to the legendary game of Cheddar Gorge - quoting from wikipedia (and correcting the mistakes) -

In spite of the strange name, the rules are quite simple. The gameplay consists of the progressive construction of a sentence, with players adding one word at a time in rotation. Each word must leave the possibility of the sentence being completed in a grammatically correct and meaningful manner, but players are to avoid actually completing the sentence. When a grammatically correct sentence has been formed, the player who added the final word is eliminated. Play continues with the remaining players starting a new sentence. The last player left is the winner.

I shall start:

Hitchhikers guide...

I know this was a little while ago, but I was wondering what everyone else thought of the return of hitchhikers to the radio, and radio four specifically, a few months back.

Personally, I enjoyed it but felt it was a little odd, since it just followed the story line of the books, rather than continuing with the plot of the radio show, which did dissapoint me slightly.

Also, I was surprised to find myself liking William Franklyn, the new boive of the book, since Peter Jones was quite so good first time round. Anyone else like/dislike the change? Or, indeed, is there anythin glaringly obvious you think i've missed out here that you liked/hated about the series.

And amongst the thousands of letters demanding we be taken off the air, we have one here from a Mrs Trellis of North Wales.

Dear Diarmut,
Recently I had a man round to cut my grass. He spent 45 minutes carrying out the work, yet tried to bill me for 3 hours. When I challenged him on this he became very aggressive to me.
If you can't help, could you please pass this on to those nice people at "Gardener Questions Time"
Thanks,
Mrs Trellis

Just a minute is one of my favourite programmes from radio four, and I type this while listening to an episode with Willie Rushton, Peter Cook, Sheila Hancock and Kenneth Williams, and I thought i'd ask which contestants, or sets of contestants were people's favourites.

I love Kenneth Williams' sniping and bitching at Nicholas Parsons, and Nicholas' ripostes...

So, what do the rest of you think?

ps.
If you go to the BBC7 website ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbc7/ ) then you can find some archive episodes, but your best bet is to search p2p apps if you're looking to find them.
